Diminishing Lagoon Services in the Era of Urbanization: A Case of Muni-Pomadze Lagoon in Ghana

TheMuni lagoon is among the six internationally recognized coastal wetlands(Ramsar site) under convention on wetlands because of role it playswhich promoting human livelihood development and ecosystem. The period urbanization has resulted in encroachment ofthe leading to decline its services. This study investigates thediminishing services as a result urbanization, using MuniPomandze case study. was largely qualitative aresult, twenty respondents were selected mainly by purposive snowballsamplings. In-depth interviews personal field observation adopted tocollect data for observed that provided numerousservices communities around catchment area lagoon.These include fishing, agricultural activities, hunting expeditions,and breeding nesting site migratory birds. From findings, wasindicated recent times, especially due emergence ofurbanization, been encroached upon estate developers andother activities which have undermined function lagoon. It isrecommended stakeholders such Municipal Assembly, PlanningDepartment should zone ensure estatedevelopers are not allowed encroach it. will humanactivities minimized area.
